Electric charging points on lamp posts

Tuesday, February 16, 2021

The Council has grant funding to deliver lamp column charging points in the borough. The aim is to deliver 100 charging points this year.

The charging points are all ‘slow’ charging points which are best suited for residential overnight charging. The purpose of lamp column charging is to give residents living on roads with limited off-street parking the ability to charge their vehicles on their road, or no more than a short walking distance away.

As a safety measure an earthing mat (a small metal grill) will be installed in the pavement next to each lamp column, but will not be noticeable after installation. The installation of the mat will take a day and will require a section of pavement immediately around the lamp column to be closed while the mat is installed.

The intention is not to change any parking restrictions next to the lamp column charging point (i.e no designated electric vehicle parking bays).

Resident suggestions for charging point locations have been taken from the Kingston “Let’s Talk” electric vehicle consultation, undertaken early last year, and from direct e-mail requests to the Sustainable Transport Team. They have been used to determine approximate locations for where these lamp column charging points should be positioned. Locations with no or limited off-street parking have been prioritised. It should be noted that not all lamp columns are technically suitable.

So far some 41 lamp columns have been identified. The sites will be subject to the outcome of a 28 day consultation period which will be announced by means of a notice fixed to the lamp-post and a letter sent to the residents nearest the lamp post. Letters and notices will go out from 15 February with the aim of installing the chargers from mid March 2021.
