Meet & Greet is back for Christmas 2012

Meet & Greet is all about the residents taking ownership of their community and reducing crime in the Canbury Ward.

This campaign was set up by an informal group of residents (with the support of the local Safer Neighbourhood team) and is being carried out across the Canbury Ward via your local NHW co-ordinator.

'On the streets' and 'In the home' are elements of this campaign encouraging all residents to get to know their neighbour, become more aware of who else is in their community and ensure their home is secure.

On the street with Meet & Greet

In the countryside everyone says 'Good morning' to everyone! But we tend not to in the town. So, nothing more than a 'good morning / afternoon / evening' to your neighbour and other persons within the neighbourhood whilst you're out and about will make us all more aware of who's in our community and more vigilant about what we do on the street.

So - fron today we're inviting you to 'take your eyes off your feet and look up the street' and say 'Good day!' to all you see...and maybe it will be reciprocated?

Simple and easy steps can be taken by all residents to deter burglars from entering their home. A home security checklist can be downloaded here......There is also some fantastic advice from the Met Police here.

Working in partnership with all street users and SelectaDNA we want to try to help you help yourselves to make our houses less of an easy target to criminals.

You can help by taking a good look at your property and asking yourself the following questions '- Am I taking enough steps to protect my house against break-in? ; Am I doing enough to make my house appear occupied when I am away? Are my neighbours keeping an eye on my property when I am away?. If you answer no to any of those questions then it is time to do something about it.

There are many low cost home security products which can be used to deter the opportunist burglar. There are some listed here but there are many more on the internet and hardware stores. Simple window locks and door chains can go a long way to protecting your property and person.

SelectaDNA is a kit which can be purchased for £50 to a individual buyer but as part of this campaign it's available at only £17 - which allows you to 'mark' your personal belongings which, should you be burgled, and the burglar caught means that the criminal can be placed at the scene of the crime and charged - no mark means that although the burglar may be caught they cannot easily be charged - no real hard evidence. It also acts as a further deterrent to the criminal - 'you're marked - let's find a house that isn't because if I am caught....'

"SelectaDNA is proven to reduce burglaries and breakins by up to 85% thus making it a highly effective crime reduction tool for police. "

There are other property marking products on the market but Select DNA have offered us a specail price for the purposes of this pilot campaign.

If you would like to be kept up to date with this campaign, join your local Neighbourhood Watch (all we need is an email address so we can send you information on local Police issues, scams, bike thefts etc.), want to purchase a SelectaDNA kit or just generally want more information please email info@bragstreet.org or get in touch with the Canbury Safer Neighbourhood team on canbury.snt@met.police.uk.
